Is anyone able to recommend me a site(s) where I can find information on WTP in Japan? I have not been able to find in the guideline.
Hi George,
I haven’t found the official willingness-to-pay threshold for QALY for Japan but you can check Igarashi, 2019. Authors stated that using Japan HTA data, prices of candidate drugs would remain the same if their ICER values are less than JPY 5 million per QALY gained. Therefore, the value of JPY 5 million can be regarded as the benchmark value of cost-effectiveness, or a quasi “threshold value”.
Also, you can check the Japan CEA Price Adjustment Rates for medical interventions based on their ICER that are presented here.
Hello all,
It is indeed as Iwona has said, Japan do not have official WTP threshold at the moment.
While in Hasegawa 2020 it is mentioned that WTP is set to 5 million JPY, it is not something that I could find officially stated by either MHLW or Chuikyo.
That being said, using 5 million threshold should be rather safe at the moment. Observing the situation is a good idea however, as this article (article in Japanese) mentions Chuikyo’s plans on revising cost-effectiveness evaluation system in 2024.
If I will come across any new information about this, I will try to keep you posted.
